Team of the Month Over the course of 7 weeks, the men’s water polo team has been ranked as the first place team for 6 straight weeks by the Michigan Water Polo Association. “Our season is going well. We have a strong team despite losing a lot of seniors from last year,” says captain Mark Flautner. “Our goal for this season is to win states, which we’re really motivated to do coming from a loss in the state finals last year.” Mark, along with two of his teammates, Liam Macneil and Matthew Christiansen, were named player of the week. In week 4, Mark had 3 goals, 3 assists, 3 steals, and 2 KOD. In week 6, Liam had 16 goals, 7 assists, 12 steals, and 4 field blocks. In week 7, Matthew had 5 assists, 4 steals, and 12 saves with a 92% save percentage. Mark recently reached 100 goals on the season in only 32 games, averaging over 3 goals a game. Congrats to this team and their dominant performances during September!

A2 Sports Media’s Male Athlete of the Month for September is Ryan Anderson. Ryan is a senior captain of the Men’s Varsity Soccer team. In sixteen games, he tallied nine goals and five assists, leading the team in both respectively. He dominates at left wing, scoring multiple game winners, including one against Holt to put the Pioneers on top 2-1. He also had a brace against U of D Jesuit to tie, scoring twice when Pioneer was down. Ryan has been playing soccer for thirteen years, and when asked about his favorite memory for Pioneer he says, “scoring a goal and tying the fourth ranked team in the state on senior night.” He enjoys spending time with his dog, family, and friends. He also enjoys watching professional soccer, including his favorite team Liverpool FC. Ryan’s favorite thing about Pioneer soccer is “creating a second family to see and play with everyday, creating a bond and being a role model for the younger players.&rdqu

The Pioneer and Huron field hockey programs joined forces last Monday, October 2 to "Stick it to Stigma," raising funds for mental health awareness in the community.   This event was planned by Emma Hamstra (Huron Asst. Coach and PFH 2010 graduate) in memory of her PFH teammate Sarah Gallagher (2010), who lost her battle with mental illness last year.  Donations at the game were raised for Garrett's Space--programming that promotes wellness healing, self-worth, and resilience for young adults struggling with depression and other mental issues.  More information and a link to donate can be found at Garrett's Space.
