Walter Horning - Volunteer 2001

Walter is honored for his 30 years as the “Voice of the Football team.”  He began his announcing of football while the team was known as Ann Arbor High.  The team played at Wines Field until 1957.  When the school moved, Walter followed and announced games until the middle seventies.

One of the most remarkable games was in 1968 when Ann Arbor High played Battle Creek Central.  Late in the game Ann Arbor coaches had to make a decision to punt or take a safety.  At that point the microphone was left on and all the press box chatter was broadcast to everyone in the stands, including when those who disagreed with the coach’s decision to punt.  Ann Arbor lost 9-7, and Battle Creek Central went on to be the state champions that year.

Walter was also known for his athletic participation, playing recreationally into his seventies.  He spent 30 years at U of M as an event staff worker, selling tickets and escorting fans to their seats.

He is fondly remembered for his sense of humor, tireless work, and support of his community.
