Colleen Barry Sherman - Athletic Alumna 2019

Colleen (Barry) Sherman, Pioneer Class of 1985, is an Athletic Alumna Award winner and is entering the Ann Arbor Pioneer Athletics Hall of Fame, Class of 2019. She is being recognized for her significant accomplishments as a six-time letter winner with the Purple and White’s field hockey and softball teams.

Colleen was a member of the vaunted Pioneer Field Hockey team for three years, 1982 to 1984. She was a key player in Pioneer’s historic 1984 State Championship, the first of 25 (to date) in the program’s history. As her Hall of Fame coach, Nancy Cox, noted, “Colleen made everyone around her better with her athleticism.”

That athleticism was just as evident on the softball diamond. A member of the varsity softball team all of her three years at Pioneer, Colleen stood out as a pitcher. She was known for her “awesome” fastball and even better change-up, according to her coach Grace Harbison. She was dominant on the mound, including pitching a perfect game against Lakeland High School her senior year. She was rewarded for her on-the-field accomplishments with several All-District, All-Area, and All-State awards.

Colleen’s success in softball attracted the attention of Michigan State University’s program. MSU awarded Colleen a full-ride scholarship to play softball for the Spartans. She lettered all four years she played for MSU. Her dominant pitching performances continued at the collegiate level. She holds places in the MSU record book for career wins, Earned Run Average, innings pitched, completed games, shutouts, and hits. Colleen also served as a captain of the softball squad. In 1988 she was named All Big-Ten and earned Player of the Week honors.

After graduating from MSU, Colleen remained in the East Lansing area, going to work for Konica Minolta where she now competes, as she says, as part of the sales force. Colleen married Steve Sherman and has two children—”very athletic” children as Colleen puts it.

For her contributions to Pioneer’s field hockey and softball programs, the Ann Arbor Pioneer Athletics Hall of Fame is privileged to have Colleen Sherman (Barry) rise to its ranks.
