Cedric Gordon - Athletic Alumni 2019

Cedric Gordon, Class of 1985, is one of the most prolific offensive players in Ann Arbor Pioneer football history and enters the Ann Arbor Pioneer Athletics Hall of Fame, Class of 2019, as an Athletics Alumnus Award nominee.

Cedric played two years, 1983-84, for Pioneer teams which were led by Hall of Fame coach Chuck Lori. Cedric was a member of the team that won the 1984 Michigan High School State Championship. In that championship season, Cedric scored 17 touchdowns, 16 of them passing. He also had 877 yards receiving, 144 yards in punt returns, and a punt return for a touchdown in that all-important state championship game, defeating Dearborn Fordson 38-12.

Cedric ended his Pioneer career with an exceptional 1,338 total yards—1,076 receiving, 18 yards rushing, and 149 punt return yards. For these and his other statistics, Cedric ranks as the leader or in the top ranks of the all-time Pioneer football leaders on offense.

He earned awards for being All-Conference, All-State, Parade All-American, and ranked in the top 50 recruited wide receivers.

Cedric’s play was so notable that Ferris State University offered him a full-ride scholarship to be on its football team. And Cedric responded with more bravura performances catching passes, scoring touchdowns, and returning punts for the Bulldogs.

At Ferris State, Cedric was named Offensive Player of the year in 1986 and 1987. He also was a Harlon Hill Trophy nominee, the Heisman equivalent for NCAA Division II football programs.

In fact, 25 years after he left Ferris State, Cedric was ranked in ten offensive categories and was, in almost all cases, the longest tenured record holder. He ranked fourth and tenth in pass receptions for touchdowns, sixth in yards per catch (20.2), fifth in receptions per game, 19th in total points scored, 12th in punt return yards, and in the top 20 in four other categories.

Cedric’s college career netted him a spot on the developmental squad with the Green Bay Packers in 1989. He also spent two years with the Houston Oilers. In 1991, he moved on to the Frankfort Galaxy, a team in the NFL Europe league. He played ten games, had 22 receptions, 289 yards, and three touchdowns.

Cedric has remained close to the Pioneer football program, helping with fund raisers and attending Hall of Fame ceremonies.

In recognition of Cedric Gordon’s outstanding contributions to the Pioneer football program, the Ann Arbor Pioneer Athletics Hall of Fame is thrilled to receive him into its ranks.
