Doug Hennigar - Athletic Alumni 2012

Doug Hennigar graduated from Pioneer High School in 1974.  He was a member of the track and field team in 1973 and 1974.  Doug was team tri-captain, received All State honors, and was a Pioneer High School record holder in eight events, both individual and relays.  Pioneer was State Runner Up Doug’s senior year, and his school records for the 60 yard dash and the 200 meters, both set in 1974, still stand.  Doug attended the University of Michigan where he was on the track and field team from 1974 to 1978 and was a two-time All American.  The 4 x 100 meter relays that Doug was a member of at Michigan never lost a Big Ten race during his four years in college.  Michigan’s 4 x 100 relay finished 4th at NCAA’s and set a U of M school record, which still stands.  Doug was also a member of Michigan’s sprint medley relay that set a World Record.  During Doug’s track career at Michigan, the team won five Big Ten Championships out of a possible eight.  He also competed at the 1976 U.S. Olympic Trials at 200 meters.  Doug says that at Pioneer his teammates helped him tune his competitive spirit and understanding of teamwork, as well as learn how consistent focus and work can optimize one’s potential.  “I learned how to catalyze a group into a team, and how each piece contributes to the whole.”
