Hall of Fame Bio.

Walt Sellers - Athletic Alumni 2006

Walt graduated from Ann Arbor High in 1945, where he left a record of excellence as a student-athlete.  He was a varsity basketball player but made his major marks on the gridiron.  He was captain of the 1943 state champion football team and was named to the All-State squad, as well as team MVP.

 

Sellers then joined the war effort, serving as a Boatswains Mate in the U.S. Navy and later as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserve.  Following military service, Walt attended Central State University, where he was MVP in football, earned his degree and served the University in various professional capacities for 36 years.

 

Seller’s other pursuits include President of the Ohio School Board Association; Xenia City schools Board of Education (serving as President for eight years), Ohio Advisory Committee for Elementary and Secondary Educations Block Grants (appointed by Governor James Rhodes) and the National Afro-American History and Cultural Museum Commission (appointed by President Ronald Reagan).

 

Among the awards and honors bestowed upon Walt by is Alms Mater are: Alumnus of the Year (1971), Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters (1988), CSU Athletic Hall of Fame and Achievement Hall of Fame.

 

The Alumni Building at Central State is named the Walter G. Sellers Alumni Center and there is a sixty-six-unit apartment building in Xenia called the Walter G. Sellers Senior Citizens Complex.  Walter and his wife Irene have five children and six grandchildren.  Is this an amazing man or what?
