This dynamic duo comprised the heart and soul—the guts and glue, if you will—of the high school Booster Club for the ten-year period, 1974-84.

Max served as president for two years (1974-76), but we all know who did the work! 

Fundraising activities engineered by the made it possible to provide weight room equipment, wrestling mats, team uniforms, a team van,

fan busses to away events and a year-ending All-Sports Banquet. 

Betty was an Ann Arbor Public Schools employee for twenty-three years— and was Pioneer Athletic Department secretary for much of that time.

The Smiths also contributed to the success of PHS athletics by supplying six Pioneer student-athletes from their own household: Mike (’72),

Bob (’74), Tom (’75), Jim (’79), Mary Beth (’80) and Lisa (’84). Their participation included cross country, track, football, ice hockey, baseball,

basketball, softball, field hockey, volleyball and golf.
