Pete Palmer - Legacy 2002

Pete Palmer attended U of M from 1947 – 1951.  While attending U of M he played football and baseball.  He played baseball from 1949-1951, and played for infamous coach Ray Fisher.  Pete describes himself as an average guy whose role was behind the scenes.  He played baseball for the minor league Philles team, then went to fight in the Korean War.

Upon his return to Ann Arbor, Pete took a job teaching physical education and coaching baseball for Pioneer High School.  Pete said that students that were not focused got a little extra arm work. He continued in this position for 30 years and was best known as “Push-up Pete.”  Others describe Pete by the saying “loud bark big heart.”

While at Pioneer, Pete coached girl’s volleyball to an undefeated season, not bad for a coach who was asked to fill in when nobody else wanted the job.   He also coached football, and basketball.
